Where we put grab bars in a home

Most people start with the bathroom, and that is usually the right call. But a grab bar helps anywhere you step up, turn, or stand up from sitting.

  • Shower: a bar at the entry for stepping in and out, and one on the long wall to steady yourself while you wash.
  • Tub: something solid to hold while you step over the tub wall or sit down and stand up.
  • Toilet: a bar beside the toilet makes sitting and standing easier.
  • Entry steps and stairs: a steady grip at the door or on a short run of steps.
  • Hallways and bedside: support on the way to the bathroom at night, and a firm hold getting out of bed.
  • Garage step and laundry: the step into the house from the garage, and the laundry room, where hands are often full.

Every wall type, anchored right

Central Florida bathrooms are a mix: tile, newer fiberglass and acrylic tub surrounds, and plain drywall in hallways and laundry rooms. Each one needs a different approach. We install on tile, fiberglass and acrylic surrounds, drywall, and more. We pick the mounting method for your wall and use heavy-duty anchors rated for the bar.

One thing to know: a towel bar is not a grab bar, and neither is the edge of a sink. They aren't built to take your weight. A real grab bar, mounted the right way, is.

Use your own bar, or we bring one

Already bought a bar you like? We'll install it. If you'd rather not shop for one, we can supply the bar for an extra cost. Just tell us which you prefer when you ask for your estimate. Either way, the $185 per bar for installation and hardware stays the same.

What separates a good grab bar from a bad one

Not everything sold as a grab bar is built to hold a person. The bars we supply are top-quality grab bars, and if you'd rather buy your own, here is what to look for.

  • Solid stainless steel: look for Type 304 stainless. It holds up to a wet shower for years. Cheaper bars are often chrome-plated or painted, and once that finish chips or peels, rust can start.
  • A thick tube wall: a good bar uses heavier 18-gauge tubing, about 1.2 mm thick. Budget bars often use thin 22-gauge tubing, about 0.8 mm, which is easier to dent. The spec sheet should list the gauge.
  • Rated for 250 pounds or more: ADA guidelines (section 609.8) call for the bar, its fasteners, its mounting, and the wall behind it to hold 250 pounds pushed or pulled in any direction. A bar with no weight rating is a warning sign.
  • The right size and spacing: a round bar should be 1¼ to 2 inches across (ADA section 609.2.1) so a hand can wrap around it, and it should sit 1½ inches off the wall (section 609.3) so fingers fit behind it without getting pinched.
  • A grip for wet hands: a textured finish, such as peened (a fine dimpled surface) or knurled, gives wet, soapy hands something to hold. Smooth bars are fine in a hallway, but texture helps in the shower.
  • Solid flanges: the flanges are the round plates that fasten the bar to the wall. Concealed flanges hide the screws under a cover for a cleaner look; exposed flanges leave the screws in view. Either works if the bar is solid and doesn't turn in its fittings.
  • Suction-cup bars are not grab bars. They can let go without warning, so we don't install them.

We install every bar to ADA guidelines for size, spacing, and strength. If you'd like us to install a bar that doesn't meet these standards, we'll note it and can still install it once you sign our waiver. Our workmanship warranty doesn't cover bars that fail on their own.

Yes. We install on fiberglass and acrylic surrounds, tile, drywall, and more. We choose the mounting method for your wall and use heavy-duty anchors rated for the bar.
