Grab bar installation in Chuluota, one right spot at a time

Sometimes the right answer is one bar, not two. On a recent Chuluota job, the homeowner looked at the options for a second bar by the shower door and decided to wait. We installed the one that mattered, on the back wall of the shower.

Chuluota homes

Chuluota, from a Creek word usually translated as "pine island," was laid out in the 1880s, and in 1892 Henry Flagler's Chuluota Land Company began selling land there. Freezes, the 1920s land bust, and the Depression emptied it out; it was revived in the 1950s and 1960s and has grown again since.

It's still small: about 2,187 people, by Census estimates, and nearly all homes are single-family houses (U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020–2024 estimates). Many sit on bigger, more rural lots than in nearby Oviedo, in a mix of older homes and newer builds.

Chuluota's mid-century homes are often concrete block with plaster or drywall inside, and its newer homes are block or frame with drywall, tile over cement backer board, or fiberglass tub surrounds. A shower door frame or a glass panel can limit where a bar fits, which is why we look at the options before drilling.

Where a stud or solid blocking sits behind the spot, we fasten into it. Where nothing solid is there, we use commercial-grade grab bar fasteners, rated by the maker for up to 600 lbs in drywall with tile and made to exceed building codes and ADA guidelines, so the bar can go exactly where it's needed even without a stud. If we ever use a different fastener, it's comparable or better.

• One bar, on the back wall. We installed a 24 in. stainless concealed-screw grab bar on the back wall of the shower. Concealed-screw bars hide the mounting screws under a cover for a cleaner look.
• A second spot, on hold. The homeowner also asked about a bar near the shower door. After looking at the options, they decided to wait on that one, so we installed just the one bar.

Before we drill, your tech walks through each spot with you: who will use the bar, which hand they lead with, and where their hand naturally goes. We hold the bar up, adjust, and mark the wall only once you're happy with it. We can't promise that a plan, grant, or program will approve a claim, and some plans ask for a letter of medical necessity from your doctor, so check with your plan administrator first.

Warranty, and who we are

Every bar we install comes with our lifetime workmanship warranty for as long as you own your home or building: if a bar loosens because of how we installed it, we fix it free. The bar itself is covered by its maker's warranty, and damage, misuse, and pre-existing wall problems aren't covered. We also come back for a free inspection at one year.
