Oviedo homes, and who lives in them

Oviedo was incorporated in 1925 as a celery and citrus town of about 800 people. It stayed small until the University of Central Florida opened next door, then grew fast: city figures show 3,074 residents in 1980, 11,114 in 1990, and 26,316 in 2000.

That boom shows in the houses. Census estimates put the median year built for Oviedo homes at 1997, and about 52% of homes were built in the 1980s or 1990s. Only 8% are older than that. Oviedo is also younger than Florida overall: 11% of residents are 65 or older, against 21% statewide (U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020–2024 estimates).

So in Oviedo, a grab bar may be for a parent who has moved in, or for someone coming home from surgery, as much as for an owner who has lived there for decades. HCA Florida Oviedo Medical Center opened on Red Bug Lake Road in 2017, so many recoveries here start close to home. If someone is coming home soon, it helps to have the bars in before they arrive.

Oviedo walls: what's behind a 30-year-old bathroom

A typical Oviedo house from the 1980s or 1990s has concrete block outside walls and wood-stud walls inside, covered in drywall. Many bathrooms from that era came with a one-piece fiberglass or acrylic tub-and-shower unit. Remodeled ones usually have tile over cement backer board.

Each takes a different approach. A fiberglass surround is a thin shell with a gap behind it, so the bar has to reach the framing or a fastener built for hollow walls. Tile over backer board needs the right bit and a careful start so the tile doesn't crack. Where a stud or solid blocking sits behind the spot, we fasten into it. Where nothing solid is there, we use commercial-grade grab bar fasteners, rated by the maker for up to 600 lbs in drywall with tile and made to exceed building codes and ADA guidelines, so the bar can go exactly where it's needed even without a stud. If we ever use a different fastener, it's comparable or better.

What we've installed in Oviedo

• Two bars, three times out of four. Three of our four Oviedo jobs were two-bar jobs, and the fourth was three bars.
• A long bar with two shorter ones. One home got two 24 in. bars and a 42 in. bar, all labeled ADA compliant, which we picked up before the visit.
• Sizing on site. For one homeowner who didn't have bars yet, our tech looked at the bathroom first, worked out the sizes, and then got the bars.
• Bars added to other work. One Oviedo visit paired two 16 in. brushed stainless bars with gutter and dryer vent cleaning. Another homeowner already had their bars, and we installed them.

Before we drill, your tech walks through each spot with you: who will use the bar, which hand they lead with, and where their hand naturally goes. We hold the bar up, adjust, and mark the wall only once you're happy with it. We can't promise that a plan, grant, or program will approve a claim, and some plans ask for a letter of medical necessity from your doctor, so check with your plan administrator first.

Warranty, and who we are

Every bar we install comes with our lifetime workmanship warranty for as long as you own your home or building: if a bar loosens because of how we installed it, we fix it free. The bar itself is covered by its maker's warranty, and damage, misuse, and pre-existing wall problems aren't covered. We also come back for a free inspection at one year.
