Grab bar installation in Winter Garden's newer homes, and its old ones

Two out of three Winter Garden homes were built after 2000. New houses have nice bathrooms, but rarely any solid backing where a grab bar needs to go. We install bars in them, and in the older homes near Plant Street, for $185 per bar.

Winter Garden homes

Winter Garden was established in 1903 and incorporated in 1908, growing up along two rail lines on the south shore of Lake Apopka. After fires, downtown was rebuilt in brick starting in 1912, and the downtown historic district was listed on the National Register in 1996. Three deep freezes in the 1980s ended the citrus era.

Since then the city has grown fast. Census estimates put the median year built for Winter Garden homes at 2004, with 65% built since 2000. 14% of residents are 65 or older, and about 34% of homes are rented (U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020–2024 estimates).

Orlando Health Horizon West Hospital opened in Winter Garden in January 2021. For a family planning a homecoming from there, or from Health Central in nearby Ocoee, a pair of bars at the shower is a common first step.

Winter Garden walls: new builds, and what's missing behind them

A typical Winter Garden house built since 2000 has concrete block outside walls, wood-stud interior walls with drywall, and a bathroom with large tile over cement backer board or a fiberglass or acrylic tub-and-shower unit. Unless the buyer asked, the builder usually didn't add wood blocking for grab bars.

Large-format tile and walk-in showers look great, but they take care to drill without cracking. The older homes in the downtown residential district are a different story, with older framing and finishes. On hollow walls, the bar goes into a stud or blocking if one is in the right place. If not, we use commercial-grade grab bar fasteners, rated by their maker for up to 600 lbs in drywall with tile and made to exceed building codes and ADA guidelines. Any other fastener we use is comparable or better.

Before we drill, your tech walks through each spot with you: who will use the bar, which hand they lead with, and where their hand naturally goes. We hold the bar up, adjust, and mark the wall only once you're happy with it. We can't promise that a plan, grant, or program will approve a claim, and some plans ask for a letter of medical necessity from your doctor, so check with your plan administrator first.

Warranty, and who we are

Every bar we install comes with our lifetime workmanship warranty for as long as you own your home or building: if a bar loosens because of how we installed it, we fix it free. The bar itself is covered by its maker's warranty, and damage, misuse, and pre-existing wall problems aren't covered. We also come back for a free inspection at one year.
