St. Cloud homes: a veterans' colony that kept growing

In 1909 a company set up by the Grand Army of the Republic, the Union veterans' organization, bought the old Disston sugar plantation on Lake Tohopekaliga and laid out St. Cloud as a colony for Civil War veterans. By late 1910 the town had about 2,000 residents, 360 homes, more than 100 tents, and three cement block plants.

Today the city is mostly new. Census estimates put the median year built for St. Cloud homes at 2003, with 57% built since 2000, while about 11% date from before 1970, many near the historic downtown. 12% of residents are 65 or older (U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020–2024 estimates).

Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital, formerly St. Cloud Regional Medical Center, has served the city for more than 60 years. If someone is coming home from a stay there, or from a hospital in Kissimmee or Orlando, bars at the shower and toilet are a good first step.

St. Cloud walls: block, then drywall

St. Cloud has built with concrete block since its first years. Older homes near downtown can have block or plaster walls and original tile. We check those before we drill.

Newer St. Cloud subdivisions are typically block outside and wood-stud drywall inside, with tile over cement backer board or a fiberglass tub-and-shower unit in the bathroom. We fasten into studs or blocking when they're where the bar belongs. When they aren't, we mount with commercial-grade grab bar fasteners. Their maker rates them for up to 600 lbs in drywall with tile and builds them to exceed building codes and ADA guidelines. If we ever switch fasteners, the replacement is comparable or better.

What we've installed in St. Cloud

Before we drill, your tech walks through each spot with you: who will use the bar, which hand they lead with, and where their hand naturally goes. We hold the bar up, adjust, and mark the wall only once you're happy with it. We can't promise that a plan, grant, or program will approve a claim, and some plans ask for a letter of medical necessity from your doctor, so check with your plan administrator first.

Warranty, and who we are

Every bar we install comes with our lifetime workmanship warranty for as long as you own your home or building: if a bar loosens because of how we installed it, we fix it free. The bar itself is covered by its maker's warranty, and damage, misuse, and pre-existing wall problems aren't covered. We also come back for a free inspection at one year.
